Barack Obama: A more Perfect Union

This is the horoscope for the “More Perfect Union” speech made by Barack Obama in Philadelphia on March 18th at approx. 10.00 a.m. Neptune and the North Node straddle the midheaven and the speech itself – from the outset – exudes a message of idealism, hope and the renewal of shared values. The speech opens with a statement: “We the people in order to form a more perfect union.” Here we have it – Neptune, midheaven and the north node are conjunct with the Moon in the horoscope of the United States. Barack Obam is speaking to everyone, to the nation as a whole, just as the Moon in Aquarius in the horoscope of the US indicates a land essentially made up of immigrants from all over the world who together have forged out a unique (Aquariuan) identity. The speech goes on to revive the image of those early Americans who together drew up the “Declaration of Independance“. The whole speech is an attempt to re-evoke the sense of shared destiny and continuity of purpose. I must admit I am personally in awe of Barack Obama. It takes courage (and he’s Leo) to make a speech like this. So many of Barack Obama’s speeches are so poetical and evocative. The tone of voice, the method of delivery are remarkable. I feel most strongly the Neptune/Sun vibration. I recommend everyone to listen to this speech. You can find it on YouTube. In view of this strong attunement to Neptune – hardly surprising that the horoscope above places Neptune smack bang on the MC.

But what does the horoscope tell us? Despite the bold attempt to unite it must be noted that in the horoscope the Moon = in mundane astrology the significator of the people = is in the sign of Leo. This of course means it is forming an opposition with its placing in the USA’s birth chart. The problem seems to be one of separatism (the opposition is itself an aspect of polarity). White Americans find it hard to imagine that Barack Obama was not influenced by Jeremiah Wright. Jeremiah –which incidentally means “the weeping prophet” – made some pretty unpatriotic statements to say the least. In political terms Barack Obama is in very hot water indeed. The Moon is also beseiged – standing here between Mars and Saturn. This is about as bad as it can get. It’s an awful situation for the country to find itself in. Obama’s campaign has been fuelled by hope and was gathering momentum – I for one hope that America can go beyond the race issue… But… it looks doubtful from where I’m standing. See my earlier posts on the democratic party horoscope. It is obvious that if Obama gets the nomination the race issue will resurface and be a major stumbling block during the election campaign later in the year.

As an astrologer, I would definitely have urged Barack Obama to have made this speech later on. He appears on the defensive.

So this week it might be appropriate to look too at the relationship between two men. One, the presidential candidate Barack Obama and the other his reverend, Jeremiah Wright. The “God Damn America” sermon is one of two sermons made by Wright which recently came to light and were made public. Though Barack Obama has responded with dignity it cannot be denied that the comments made by Wright have caused immense damage to the Obama campaign. The US presedential election this year is taking place under the auspices of a Saturn/Uranus opposition. Well – we can all see Uranus can’t we. Which ever candidate the democrats ultimately chose – will eventually have to take on the role of Uranus. This is all pretty revolutionary stuff anyway.
