Joran van der Sloot confesses… Elizabeth Hathway, DFAstrolS, QHP
At times like this I feel the mother in me and it is the mother/Pluto theme that I want to explore in this post. As a mother myself, I wonder how it must feel to know that your son has taken another’s life? Pluto rules death – taking a life is a Plutonian act. In 2008 Joran van der Sloot appeared on Dutch television with his parents. Mother – Anita van der Sloot was in complete denial. Her son was innocent.

I would like to share with you an intriguing  piece of information that was recently posted by a Dutch astrologer on an astrology mailing list. The astrologer, Elodie Hunting, knew Anita van der Sloot, when she lived and worked in Arnhem. I have translated the text (with permission from the author), the original Dutch text is printed below.

” I knew Anita when she lived and worked in Arnhem as an artist and art teacher. In the 70’s she made a trip to Tibet and visited a temple there. In the temple she unknowingly touched the sacred Relic housed there. The monks were deeply shocked by this. They gave her an amulet and told her that for the rest of her life, she should always carry it with her.  If she did not, she was told that great misfortune would befall her. As a child, I was deeply impressed by this and I had totally forgotten about it, until I saw Anita on the Pauw and Witteman show (in 2008). Though I am unable to provide evidence for this story … it does provide food for thought……….My ties with the family are no longer such that I feel that I can approach them for birth data.”

There are strong Pluto undercurrents this story. The idea of some kind of curse or black magic springs immediately to my mind.  Pluto rules the ID, the deepest unconscious drives, that have the ability to set the ball rolling in uncontrollable ways. Perhaps Pluto is in some way linked to the existence of evil itself. Does evil exist? In the year that Pluto was discovered, Sigmund Freud published an essay, “Civilization and its Discontents“. In all these long years, it has never been out of print. In this essay Freud explores more deeply the nature of human beings and their deepest desire for erotic fulfillment. Freud proposes that human beings are equally driven by a desire for destruction. This theory, became known at Thanatos, or the “death-drive” . Freud first formulated his ideas on civilization during  the midst of the hell that we know as the “Great War, 1914-1918”.  With Pluto in Cancer at that time- millions of mothers grieved. In this essay Freud’s  ideas find a wider application. It is a profound if pessimistic book.

But Pluto is also about revealing. Break down so that the truth may emerge, like phoenix from the ashes. For only the truth can set us free. My very first thoughts when Joran was linked to second murder, went out to the mother of Natalee Holloway. Finally some justice for Natalee’s grieving mother. However, for all mothers, who just like the ancient Demeter/ Ceres, (with whom incidentally Pluto is now conjunct), there is no joy, only deep sadness at the loss of a child. Bringing life into the world, carries a very high price tag.
