Saturn in Libra: Why Saturn is exalted in Libra

justitia

Saturn is set to finally enter on 21st of July. This a re-print of an earlier article on why Saturn is exalted in Libra. On Thursday Saturn makes a first tentative move into Libra. The last two and half years, Saturn has been in the critical, earthy sign Virgo. Saturn is connected to society’s rules, its basic structures, it’s backbone. Since the fall of Lehman Brothers there has plenty of criticism of traders, money dealers, bankers, etc. etc. etc. Virgo – through its ruler Mercury – is connected to trade and business and we have seen that the small man – the worker (Virgo) has carried the brunt of the financial fall out. Libra is an air sign and at its root lies the idea of balance, justice and fair play. Saturn is exalted in Libra and it is interesting to ponder on why this might be the case. Saturn is in detriment in Aries – where a demand for too much structure (Saturn) might hamper Aries’ youthful enthousiasm and creativity. On the other end of the scale, in the Libra season, decisions taken will determine the survival of the tribe.  Harvest is a particularly Virgoan affair – the chaff is sorted from the corn – the success or failure of the harvest determines how the corn is shared out during the winter season.  Tough but fair decisions will have a positive impact on the group. It is interesting that Lady Justice holds a sword (Aries as warrior) in one hand and the scales (Libra) in the other. SHe is blindfolded so she is unable to see who she is judging, thus ensuring impartiality of sentence.

Balance is always finely tuned. It might only take a horse’s hair to tip the scales or a single drop of water to start the bucket spilling over. So however good Libra might be in creating balance – it is always delicate and liable to change. Libra is after all also a cardinal sign. Saturn on the other hand is the principle of crystallization. It makes things solid, concrete. The water can’t spill over if it has become ice. Saturn is exalted in Libra because it represents the principle of maintaining the status quo, holding onto the balance, making the agreement firm and decisive. Libra benefits from SAturn’s ability to stick to his guns. Saturn is thorough and exacting. While Saturn benefits from Libra’s ability to see both sides of any argument.
