The Astrology of Spying…

The recent exchange of  spies between the USA and Russia at Vienna airport left me contemplating the astrology of spying. What makes a good spy and what astrological signature would we be looking for ? The first planet that came to my mind was Mercury. Mercury has a double nature, is androgynous, and has everything to do with information. Mercury is the right hand of the Sun, always staying pretty close to the seat of power. Mercury was the ruler of thieves and tradesmen, and that is what spying is all about: buying and selling of information. Spying – like prostitution – is an old business. Long before the outer planets were discovered, people were spying. I once read a book about Galileo – and was intrigued by the high level of spying at the Italian court. Long before internet, survaillance camera’s, tracking devices, etc. etc. etc. – people were involved in the dangerous but profitable art.

If we think about the horoscope of a country, then clearly spying is all about subversive practices, by unknown people, with the aim of undermining a country. This is clearly a 12th house affair, so planets in the 12th, and it’s ruler are of astrological interest. The recent solar eclipse (July 11th 2010- two days after the spy exchange)  fell in the 20th degree of Cancer. This eclipse falls on the USA’s Sun/Mercury midpoint. Meanwhile Mars, the ruler of the USA’s 12th house,  was certainly in the picture when the net began to close on the ten (wo)man ring. A fake meeting set up by the FBI on June 26th 2010 for example, shows transitting Mars in the 11th degree of Virgo, squaring the USA descendant (open enemies) and Uranus which sits on that house cusp. (The horoscope of the USA)

What an intriguing story it is. But we haven’t quite reverted back to the Cold War days. A quick exchange of spies in Vienna and the whole thing seems to have blown over with no serious consequences to USA/Russia relationship. However, one does wonder how the poor children of these Russian spies will come to terms with what has happened.

So.. what about  Russia? Well Mercury –  in its own sign Gemini – rules the 12th house of the horoscope of New Russia. On June 26th, transitting Jupiter conjunct Uranus were in the 7th (house of open enemies) and both were in sextile to Mercury. The cat was about to jump out of the bag. This is also an indication of how a surprising turn of events, concerning Cold War enemies, suddenly hit the world headlines. Uranus is new technology – Jupiter is old.  While new technology played a role in catching the group, old style techniques (burying money in parks, and coded responses at meetings) were reminiscent of an old James Bond movie.  But the conjunction falls in Aries – sign of new beginnings. The world is clearly a different place that during the 1960’s.

My take on the astrology of spying makes Mercury a leading player. But for a different opinion, check this blog out:  Astrology of Spying, this author gives Pluto a key role to play when examining the horoscopes of individual spies. Now, I could live with that  were it not for the fact that spying is an old game. Pluto might like to lurk about and be happy to participate in subversive practice, but Pluto is one of the new kids on the block.   The horoscope of New Russia:

Having said that,  from a mundane perspective, Pluto is in Capricorn  (state secrets) and in hard aspect to Jupiter, Uranus, and shortly also once again to Saturn. Pluto is never entirely free from suspicion, so we have every right to be vigilant 🙂
