President Obama’s UK Visit: Mercury playing up !

President Obama who is currently touring Europe, landed last night (23 May) at Stansted Airport at 22.15 BST. His arrival was brought forward by a day due to yet another Icelandic ash cloud. Nature is disruptive when Uranus is in Aries.

Last year on the 14th April – another Icelandic ash cloud brought all flights in and out of the UK to a standstill.  When that decision was taken – Mercury was in almost exactly the same position as it is today: 2010 flight ban Mercury 11.55 Taurus, 2011 Mercury, Obama’s visit, 23 May, 11.52 Taurus.  A close call – I think you’ll agree. When in this degree, Mercury in Taurus is conjunct with UK Mars in the 8th house ruler of UK 2nd house of finance. Mars is in detriment in Taurus so this is a good indication of the heavy final losses the UK suffered at this time, and the total chaos at UK airports. While we Brits are a down to earth lot at the best of times –  in a life or death situation we definitely play safe. 

So Mars rules UK 2nd and 7th houses and at the moment the UK is also experiencing her Mars return. Clearly Britain hopes to gain something from this meeting with President Obama– but with Mars in the 8th house, there will be insecurity that we will not. Mars in the 8th is secretive, so a lot of wheeling and dealing will go on behind closed doors.  As one UK newspaper put it: “Conservatives are hoping on the basis of talks with the White House that Obama will say he is aligned with Britain on the economy.” On all fronts, Britian is clearly looking for an ally.

President Obama is a Leo and the Sun in Gemini is neatly conjunct with the UK 9th house of foreign dignitaries and contacts. Gemin is known to have a forked tongue – and can say one thing and do another. However – Gemini – is also about contact, dialogue, and exchanging views. But with Mercury – Gemini’s ruler in slow moving Taurus – if traveling expect hiccups.
