Roe vs. Wade – Obama vs Mcain

This week, on the BBC website, I listened to Barack Obama and John McCain discuss the Roe vs. Wade case and a woman’s right to choose. I felt the hair on the back of my neck rise. My jaw tensed. You could say I had a physical response. Like most women I see abortion as a necessary evil. Sometimes it is the only wise choice and I – like many of my generation – will always defend a woman’s right to make it. With Sarah Palin – a pro-lifer – running on the McCain ticket, certain fundamental women’s rights are at stake in this election. So let’s take a look at the horoscope for Roe vs. Wade, the deciscion which gave American women the right to choose. Horoscope details. 22 January 1973, 12.00, Dallas, Texas.

First a little background information. The Roe vs. Wade case refers to a challenge brought against the State of Texas by a single mother, Roe. Roe claimed that she has been raped, and she questioned the right of the State of Texas to deny her a legal abortion. Initially Roe ( a pseudonym) lost her case. Eventually the Supreme Court decided in her favour. The Roe vs Wade ruling, in effect legalised abortion up to the 26th week of pregnancy.

With Saturn opposing Mars – and the Moon moving away from its square to both planets – we can see that we are dealing with a highly emotive issue here. To this day, large pro-life demonstrations take place on Jan. 22. Mars aptly describes the surgeon, whose intervention blocks the natural ebb of life, as symbolised by the Moon. Abortions are violent and painful, both emotionally and physically. Mars is ruled by Jupiter, the natural ruler of law, and Jupiter itself exalts Mars. This mutal reception emphasises the need to legally direct the hand of the surgeon, to lay down laws and correct procedures. This brings clarity. The opposition from Saturn to Mars could point to the paternal influence, the fathers – Gemini is a double-bodied sign. Saturn always represents existing structures and surely plays an important role in DNA.  Perhaps Saturn in combination with Mars – donates the seed itself. The role – in a physical, material sense -of the male in the creative process.

Furthermore the Moon is in Virgo – the symbol of purity, of woman as yet untouched by man. Here there is an archetypal link to a certain phase of a woman’s life. The emergence of the feminine from the soul of the child. The Moon square to Mars, has a violent quality. The Roe vs. Wade case was based on a situation where a woman had been violated. Echoes here of Pluto and Persephone. The Moon in Virgo also points to the perfect situation we would like all women to be in when they discover they are pregnant. Unfortunately – this is not always the case. The Moon seeks solace and comfort (the trine) by Jupiter. The paternal Jupiter, who thankfully takes up her case. The South Node of the Moon is in the fertile Cancer but here Venus conjuncts the North Node in the sign of maturity, Capricorn. The Cancer/Capricorn axis perhaps reflecting here, the natural biological process of creation (Cancer) and the well thought through -but nonetheless painful and responsiblility loaded act of choice (Capricorn). Abortion is not easy for women and most do not take the step lightly.

What we see at present, is how fragile such laws are. Should a pro-lifer enter into the White House … pro-lifers everywhere might rise up and seize back what was given. ……This is what women fear. That men – like Pluto – will once again seize control of what is not theirs to command. Their physical body. Women have a long, long, long history of control that is still being overcome.

Looking at the horoscope it is clear that Uranus is hakking into the Moon. Uranus is rattling cages. Stirring things up again. Jupiter is making its return. The laws are being tested. Rightly so. Independant life outside the womb is possible much sooner than 30 years ago. Pluto is coming into picture and will square Pluto in the chart within the next couple of years. Some changes – probably involving this fragile boundary between life and death – will surely take place. But, then like most women, I have no problem on this score. This will always be about a small group of pregnancies. We see too that with better education, the number of abortions itself, is slowly falling.

So… I say to myself, and to my American sisters… “Oh Ye of little faith”….  The Sun is in the fixed air sign Aquarius in this chart. Fixed in Aquarius the sign of our humanity. Surely we can never go back to those horrible back street days, where women suffered, died and lost their children anyway??? ….No..  Barack Obama for president!!!! Definitely…
