The Bratz Horoscope: Barbie House Rules

I was first introduced to a Bratz doll at my sister’s house. She wore a black plastic suit with the most enormous boots and had deep purple, pouting lips. My niece clearly adored her and so did I.  Bratz first made their appearance at the New York Toy Fair which opened in New York at 10.00 am, on 11 February 2001. These Sun in Aquarius dolls caused controvery from the start. Feminists, and many parents accuse the makers MGA of sexualising young girls. Oh Really. Just take a look at Gerard Ter Borch (1617-1681) portrait of Helena van der Schalcke aged two!!!!  One shudders to think what agonies that child must have sufferend to look just like mum. So, Bratz clearly reflect the modern age no more, no less. Only Barbie wants them banned. And what Barbie wants…. Barbie gets. The Bratz horoscope.

These dolls stepped into the limelight under a Saturn, Uranus square, and are set to leave the scene under the Saturn, Uranus opposition. The dolls clearly vibrate with this planetary cycle. These Sun in Aquarius conjunct Uranus dolls epitomise urban cool. These girls are not ladies. Ken won’t be driving by later, and you won’t find them prancing about on ponies either. They are fashionistas, with Mars in Scorpio, which makes them daring, self controlled, go – getters. The energy is fixed, electric and clearly different. Venus in Aries makes them wayward and self determined. Oh yes…It is clear to see why many parents confiscate them.

But Uranus is also about controversy of another sort. A federal court judge has decided that the doll’s designer, Carter Bryant, did develop the idea for Bratz while working for Mattel, owner of the Barbie doll. The dolls will now be banned as of February 11th 2009. Which just happens to be the doll’s birthday.

One look at the chart shows that the great leveller, Neptune is poised to transit over the Sun in the Bratz horoscope. Neptune is a planet that is linked to dissolution, to the evaporation of dreams, and to quirky court rulings, like this one. It is a shame in some ways that Bryant could not develop his idea elsewhere, afterall Mattel had decided it did not want his idea. Barbie it seems, would not tolerate rivals.

So…. For Bratz the dream is over. The House of Barbie Rules Okay. Or does it?
