Anniversary Uprising in Tibet

Fifty years ago today on March 10th 1959, an uprising began in Lhasa against the Chinese rule in Tibet. Fearful for the safety of their religious leader, the Dalai Lama, thousands of people  gathered around his palace. Rumours abounded that the Chinese were about to kidnap the Dalai Lama or worse. Hence started a violent conflict which led to the Dalai Lama’s flight to India, on March 17th. The horoscope of the uprising in Tibet..

This is an event chart and since the exact time is unknown, I am working with a noon chart. So where do we begin? I think we could perhaps start by identifying the Dalai Lama. The Sun -and very possibly the Moon- here are in Pisces – and are ruled by Jupiter. The strong religious tradition and the quality of that faith, is clearly demonstrated by Jupiter, in its own sign Sagittarius. This placement makes me think of high mountains, clear air, and a vision of truth that has world wide appeal. Jupiter travels. I think we could quite safely give the Sun and Moon to the land and its people and Jupiter to the Tibetan Faith and the Dalai Lama himself. After all, it was a threat to the leader, that triggered the event.

So… where do we find the Chinese ??? Where are the aggressors to be found here?

We could perhaps think of Pluto and Saturn. Pluto seems to lend itself well to a kidnap attemtp, to plotting behind the scenes and to state sanctioned violence. Saturn in its own sign suggests a highly organised and coldly carried out change of system. Though the Chinese had been in Tibet since 1951, when the Dalai Lama left, the heart must have been torn out of the people.

The mutual reception between Mars and Mercury, clearly reflect the speed with which the rumour spread through Lhasa that something was going to happen to their spiritual leader. This reception shows the willingness of the people to act (Mars) on the basis of what they had heard whispered (Mercury).

Ten years after the Dalai Lama left Tibet, Jupiter turned retrograde. In 2004 it left its own sign Sagittarius and entered Scorpio, the sign that rules over crisis, loss, and symbolic or real death. Jupiter was poised to enter Scorpio when the person that the Dalai Lama chose as the new Panchem Lama was abducted by the Chinese. So called… for his own safety. The wherearbouts of this boy and his family have never been revealed.

So… is there any hope at all for the Tibetan people and their religion? Does the chart say anything at all about this that could give us some hope?

The Tibetan faith has a strong oral tradition. Looking at the mutual recption between Mercury and Mars in the chart, could it be that attempts to violenty supress or indoctrinate the people, will actually serve to strengthen the power of the word? Only time will tell…
