Mars in Leo goes Direct: Barack Obama pushes ahead

This current “Long Stay of Mars in Leo” is the first since 1962/63- this is because in order to qualify for a long stay the planet must remain in the same sign and not retrograde back into the previous one – as it did for example in 1977/78. Being Sun ruled – this placement of Mars – intensifies the masculine will to power. The Sun is linked to the conscious awareness of what one want to achieve with ones life, the hero’s journey. Mars galvanises the solar energy to push forward and reach desired goals. Mars is linked to the desire nature – and being Sun ruled – we could expand this and say “the heart’s desire”. What you want most. The retrograde period then – feels constrained, held back, signifies hold ups, restraints, the energy is stunted and an internal struggle takes place. What one wants needs to be refined, purified, heated up in true Mars fashion – and cleared of dross. With Mars slowing down early on in March – it is interesting to see how Barack Obama – a Leo – is now making an attempt to “bulldoze” his health care plan trhough congres. “The Democrats can make use of a legislative technique called “reconciliation” to force the bill through Congress, though Mr Obama avoided using the term. ” Notice the use of the word force here… This is the Sun/Mars will to action, which brokes no opposition. Push is another word used in this article. Clearly much rests on Barack Obama getting his health reforms through Congres. He needs to show he can do this – by hook or by crook. Interesting isn’t it, that at this time transitting Mars was conjunct Barack Obama’s Mercury. The major focus of tension at present – health reform – is a sixth house affair – and this is where Mars has been transitting since October 2009.

The same applies in our own lives. Mars in Leo’s placement in the birth chart brings a particular area of life to the foreground. Where there has been frustration – due to the thwarting of will  – there can now come a breakthrough. This will to forge ahead in this particular area will receive an extra impulse when the Sun moves into Aries – the sign in which it is exalted – and which is ruled by Mars. Strong, very strong reception here. This is an important and decisive time. Don’t waste it!!

This recurring 79 year cycle is divided into two periods of 32 and 47 years, so at these intervals we are able to observe the influence of Mars in a particular sign over a longer time span. Mars’ last long time stay in Leo was from October 1962 – until June 1963, the one prior to that was from October 1930 til June 1931. The current long stay of Mars in Leo – will be from 17 October 2009 until June 7th 2010. Now, Mars normally spends roughly 42 days in one sign, so there’s a huge difference between this and the almost eight month stay Mars is now due to make. The reason for this is the retrograde motion of the planet.
