Horoscope: The World Cup, Africa rising..

After a spectacular concert last night, today the World Cup well and truly kicks off. The official opening ceremony takes places this afternoon at 14.00, in Johannesburg. This is the first time that the “Dark Continent” hosts the World Cup.  However, the days of  Africa touting this name  are clearly drawing to a close, as Bishop Desmond Tutu rightly reminded us last night, Africa  is “The cradle of the World”. The horoscope of the World Cup Opening.

This is a fantastic opportunity for South Africa. The North Node on the IC in Capricorn,  emphasises the idea of roots, of creation, of birth, while Venus in Cancer, ruler of the ascendant in the 10th house, expresses the idea of a nation re-born, a land of immense beauty, that is intensely proud of itself and its people. (Venus and the Moon are in very strong reception.) Venus is also very often prominent in the horoscope of peace settlements – and after a bloody history – South Africa has every right to be proud of what it has achieved. This World Cup is set against the backdrop of several planetary cycles. Firstly we have the conjunction of Jupiter and Uranus at O degrees of Aries. This is a powerful and exciting energy and signals a new beginning, not only for South Africa but perhaps for the continent as a whole. The conjunction falls in the 6th house, which could translate as profit from sport. Sport falls under the 5th house. Interestingly with Pluto in Capricorn – executives are not coming in the huge numbers the organisers expected. Times are hard. However, we can only conclude that this has been great news for the ordinary Africans. Ascendant ruler, Venus in 10 – in Cancer – is ruled by the Moon (the common people)- so hey, let the people in on the act. Mega interest amongst ordinary South Africans for the tournament.

The aspects between Saturn and Pluto, from a mundane perspective, are not only about “back to basics”, but also have to do with emerging, developing nations. While in the past, where aid is concerned, Africa has more often than not been perceived as a black hole. War, mis-management, corruption, drought, hunger, time and time again these are the stories that  hit the headlines. Now, I think we are starting to turn the corner. Slowly but surely, more and more stories of creativity, of human endeavour,of  inventivenss, of the succes of micro-credit, are starting to seep through.  I don’t know about you, but personally I see my image of Africa changing.  Add to this Pluto’s placement in Capricorn – and I have a clear sense of Africa slowing starting the long climb, like the goat, from darkness into the light. AND We should also not forget the  powerful psychological impact of the Obama presidency !! Prejudice has found its nemesis in the person of Barack Obama.

Then there is the Saturn/Uranus cycle – which with Saturn now direct – is gathering momentum once again.  There is a strong police presence in South Africa, and so far we have seen no serious disruptions to schedule. However, this energy is taut, and the townships in South Africa are a breeding ground for social unrest. So we’ll have to wait and see how this pans out.

This is a fantastic moment. In the midst of anxiety, strife, and failing economies, football will once again show its unbelievable propensity for bringing people together. We are all as one when watching the game. That we get to experience this – under exactly these types of planetary energies – is quite remarkable.
