Rememberance Day: The Treaty of Compiegne

The Armistice that ended the First World War was signed in a railway carriage in Compiegne France, at 05.45 am on 11 November 1918. Also known as the Armistice of Compiègne it came into force at 11:00 a.m. Paris time on 11 November 1918 and marked a victory for the Allies and a defeat for Germany, although not formally a surrender. The war had cost the lives of around 16 million people. At 11. o clock, on 11th November, people across the UK still remember the dead of all wars, by holding a two minutes silence. On the nearest Sunday, at the Cenotaph (which means empty tomb”, crowds will gather, as they have done since the first commemoration there in 1919. This article looks at the chart.

The first interesting point in this horoscope,is the position of Venus is in the 1st house. Venus is often angular when peace is made, signalling in such charts an end to hostilities. Further, Venus in sign of fall, is conjunct with the Sun in Scorpio, which forms the focal planet of a fixed t-square, also involving Saturn and Uranus. This was a victory – but a bitter one – there were no real winners. The Saturn/Uranus opposition is often linked to modernity, particularly to the conflict between old and new methods and technologies. It was during the latter phase of the war for example that the tank arrived. However, Saturn is in Leo, so also representing the old order of the monarchy and state, while Uranus is in Aquarius, suggesting the emergence of new countries and ideologies. Think here of the fall of the Ottoman Empire and the Russian Revolution. Uranus in the 4th and Saturn in the 10th, are good indicators of the total upheaval to both states (4th) and leadership (10th).

The Moon in the chart – the people – is in Aquarius – and deeply involved in the t-square. The world was traumatized by the events experienced between 1914-1918, and the Moon here perhaps serves as a reminder that it was the politics of the time, abstract (Aquarian) forces and ideological perspectives surrounding allegiance- that drew the world into the war. Jupiter – in the sign of its exaltation Cancer – is in the 9th house suggesting a renewal of faith and hope, not to mention the relief at being released from imminent danger. Revisiting this old post – I notice that Mars is Sagittarius and way OOB – perhaps suggesting the extreme level of violence – and devastation on a physical level. Furthermore, Mars in anaretic degree and about to cross the axis of the world. In the final hours of the war – a further 83.000 people were killed. By 11 am, the time the armistice took effect, Mars had ingressed Capricorn where it is Saturn ruled – Saturn is conjunct Regulus – but in detriment in Leo. Perhaps this is the guarantee that the souls of the warriors will be remembered. On the Cenotaph in London, a simple text ‘The Glorious Dead’.

Furthermore, Neptune is stationary retrograde – and Uranus stationary direct. Pluto had not yet been discovered

The second in this series of articles will look at the start of the First World War: the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand.
