A friend of mine (Fiona Ivanov) has been rabbitting on to me for ages about the wonders of slow food. Slow food… Yeah. Well with British restaurant Dinner, now (officially ??) the best in the world, and British cuisine back on the menu, time me thinks, to take a look at the horoscope of the chef that managed to turn the tables on traditional ideas of British food. Flatulent, fried, fat, fish and chips? Forget it. Delicious, delightful de lovely… designer dinners, more like it. I am of course, talking about Heston Blumenthal. But let me first just give you a flavour of what’s on the menu at Dinner: what about, Meat Fruit for starters… original recipe stems from circa 1500. Or Savoury Porridge – made of cod cheeks, pickled beetroot, garlic and fennel, original recipe circa 1660. Then there’s Beef Royal, which is slow cooked for 72 hours – and originally dates from around 1720. Clearly Heston Blumenthal has a love of the great old tradition of cooking – coupled with an incredible imagination (or is it simply wierdness??) . The horoscope of Heston Blumenthal (May 27 1966, 12.00 (time unknown) High Wycombe).
Passion for food is what we are looking for… and Venus in Aries – in mutual reception with Mars in Taurus suggests such an intense desire for tactile experiences. Blumenthal has Jupiter in Cancer in his horoscope – which suggests a reverence for the past – coupled with a need to teach people something about the good life. As a sign, Cancer is keenly interested in eating and views the whole experience of being together and sharing food as an integral part of family life. With this in mind, in the light of the UK’s Moon in Cancer, I must admit I always found it difficult to understand British eating habits. For originality however, we need look no further than the Mercury, Sun conjunction in Gemini. Mercury here is in cazimi – i.e. in the heart of the Sun – suggesting skill, dexterity, nimble-ness, and of course modernity. This Mercury has something extraordinarily good about it. By feeding not only the body, but also the mind, Heston Blumethal has succeeded in making eating interesting again. He has managed to channel the past into the present – and put British food back on the world stage!!
