Astrology: David Cameron versus Alex Salmond: The Great Scottish Independence Game

Astrology: David Cameron has succeeded (again) in getting his name splashed over the front pages of every newspaper in the United Kingdom. If he isn’t kicking up a fuss in Europe where in December he vetoed a EU treaty to tackle the Euro crisis, he is picking a fight with the leader of the Scottish Nationalist Party Alex Salmond. Maggie Thatcher would be proud. Clever boy David. Or is he? David Cameron versus Alex Salmond, round one…..

Astrology: Which horoscopes? Let’s look at the horoscope for the union of Scotland with England. Though Charles Carter uses the date the union came into effect, May 1, 1707, I think the date that the treaty was actually signed on Jan. 16 1707 – is more telling in this case. For a start, it has the Sun in Capricorn (as does the UK) – and because treaty Mercury is very closely conjunct to both UK Sun, Alex Salmond’s Mercury/Sun conjunction, and to transiting Pluto. Certainly now that Alex Salmond has chosen 2014 as the year that the Scottish nation will decide on Full Independence (or simply on more powers for Scotland) – this draws the degrees 12-14 Capricorn into strong focus.

Astrology: This whole fight broke out around Monday’s Full Moon (falling on treaty’s Sun/Mercury midpoint). At the last election, Alex Salmond, made a pledge to give the Scots the right to chose for independence, now David Cameron decided to push the Scots into holding this referendum early. Cameron claimed investors were not clear about Scotland’s position, and were therefore keeping their pennies in their pockets. Salmond took offence to the bullish language of a Tory Prime Minister and fought back basically saying, ‘keep your nose out of Scottish affairs, we will decide, when and where’. By yesterday, Cameron was threatening the Scots with court action – claiming only the UK Parliament has the right to decide on constitutional questions. Now Alex Salmond has announced a date himself: 2014. The stakes are high and with Pluto due to transit over the UK Sun in the next few years and Uranus poised to square it, some caution is called for. Oh why don’t politicians employ astrologers???

Astrology: A quick look at this chart. Jupiter transits the North Node – bringing the idea of greater freedom and autonomy for Scotland into focus. The transiting Capricorn Sun has been squaring  union Neptune – which suggests confusion, the idea of being bogged down, or a struggle to clarify issues, the big one being of course, “where does true authority lie?” Transiting Saturn is also in the picture, as  he moves towards his stationary degree, he becomes heavier – and he squares the Sun – again bringing power struggles and introducing the idea of “might is right”, which is particularly tricky when dealing with a fiercely independent people like the Scots. David Cameron could easily overplay his hand here, which is probably why Scottish minister Michael Moore (Gemini) was rushed in, to smear ointment on the wounds. Things are looking good for Alex Salmond.

Astrology: The relationship between David Cameron and Alex Salmond is all important. Cameron is a Libran – Salmond is a Capricorn, and clearly these two do not get on – and by taunting the authority of the British Government, Salmond is cleverly re-opening old wounds, revisiting history. If Cameron appears too high and mighty – he risks losing the game. Gosh… why doesn’t Labour have a leader like Alex Salmond. Ed Milliband is a Capricorn – true enough – but he sadly lacks Alex Salmond’s fighting spirit. Ed Milliband needs to quit  the intellectual high ground – he won’t win an election from up there. In the next article, a closer look at the dynamic between Cameron and Salmond.
