Mars had just broken ranks. leaving the collective unity of seven planets in Pisces for individualistic Aries, when the conclave started. Pope Francis was chosen surprisingly quickly. He is the first South American pope, the first Jesuit pope, and the first pope to use the name Francis. Well, at the moment Uranus in Aries is the big game breaker. Just as Uranus gets his reserve troops in, his back up from Mars, a decision is taken. Perhaps it is no surprise then that the horoscope of Pope Francis, born Dec. 17 1936, 12.00 Buenos-Aires 12.00 (time unknown) – itself, resonates very strongly with the Uranus discovery horoscope. In the long line of popes, his will be considered an Uranian reign.
The 76-year-old Bergoglio, was said to have finished second when Pope Benedict XVI was elected in 2005. At the time transitting Pluto was conjunct his radix Sun and the North Node. Pluto was also significantly in the picture at the time of Bergoglio’s ordination, on Dec. 13, 1969. It being at 27 deg. Virgo, and square to his radix Sun and the Moon’s Nodes. It is only now, with Pluto transiting South Node ruler Mercury, that Bergoglio gets the job. Here Pluto’s role in a person’s evolutionary journey is underscored. The Sun is about the individual will, the conscious intent, and in Bergoglio’s horoscope it is conjunct the North Node. Perhaps in 2005 some karmic residue of will or desire connected to the outcome, blocked his path. Something needed to be overcome. However, now with South Node ruler Mercury in the picture, what do we get, movement forward. Interestingly, many astrologers consider Mercury to be associated with the Catholic Church: Mary, Maria, Virgo, Mercury, the Message. No surprise then that new pope left the Vatican early this morning, 12 hours after his election: ‘Francis, the Argentinian cardinal who has become the first pope born outside Europe in 1,300 years, went to Rome’s 5th-century Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore; there he prayed before a famed icon of Mary, the mother of Jesus, which is known as the Salus Populi Romani, or Protectress of the Roman People.” His progressed Mercury is now in almost exact sextile with the radix Sun.
Pope Francis’ horoscope is an interesting one. Saturn and Neptune in opposition square the Moon’s Nodes, suggesting a difficult bringing together of faith, hope, and charity (Neptune) and the karma of the past (Saturn in Pisces). This is a very intuitive opposition, intimating strong undercurrents of knowledge that is deeply felt and understood. However, Neptune is the modern ruler of the Sun/North Node, and Saturn, despite the opposition, is Neptune ruled. Interestingly, St. Francis himself, was a man of visions, revelations which guided his faith. Could this also be true for the new pope? With radix Sun separating from its square to Neptune, this is a distinct possibility.
In my experience, when a birth chart resonates strongly with the discovery horoscope of one of the outer planets, this will say something about the orientation and general approach to life. The horoscope of Pope Francis resonates strongly with the discovery horoscope of Uranus. It is for this reason, that his will be an Uranian reign. This means that a lot will happen, surprises will take place, major changes and shifts, some shocks and upsets. Stability is not this pope’s strongest point, acting quickly, and intuitively is.
