The Astrology of Love and Relationships: Part Two – David Bowie & the Mystical Union

The astrology of love and relationships: Part Two – Bowie & the Mystical Union

In the first part of my Valentine’s Day Special, I looked at the horoscope for the first meeting between Iman and Bowie, in Los Angeles on October 14th 1990. Much has been written about David Bowie and the deep love he shared with his wife Iman. I want to try to understand that connection – hence these articles. In this post I will be taking a closer look at the synchronicity between the horoscopes of Bowie and the ‘first meeting horoscope’. I always begin by looking at the secondary progressed horoscope. While transits are collective – we are all experiencing Saturn in Sagittarius  – the narrative of the secondary progressions is deeply personal. The secondary progressions express the inner dimensions of a life and are  – in my opinion – connected to developments related to the soul mission.

One of the things that immediately stands out here – is that when Bowie met Iman on 14 October 1990, he  is experiencing a secondary progressed New Moon. Symbolically this is a seed moment and a new cycle of life experience is being initiated. The male/female, conscious/unconscious, active/passive life qualities are conjoined in a symbolic mystical union. The New Moon falls in early Pisces – the sign in which Venus is exalted. The potential of radix Venus conjunct the midheaven – is about to express itself on an important personal level. Venus is ruler of Bowie’s Part of Marriage, which is in 4°Libra 4. A true mystical marriage – symbolized by the secondary progressed conjunction of the Sun & Moon – now takes place.

The new moon triggers a number of  powerful midpoints in Bowie’s natal horoscope, the most important being: Mars, Su/Ma, Venus, Ve/ Su & Ve/Mc. The secondary progressed New Moon squares the natal MC/Venus conjunction. Secondary progressed Venus and the MC – stand conjunct with Bowie’s radix Sun/Mars conjunction. Bowie later claimed that his marriage to Iman was ‘his greatest achievement. It is possible – when looking at the secondary progressed horoscope – to understand why.

The second horoscope – has Bowie’s horoscope (born Jan. 8, 1947, 09.00 Brixton, London) on the inner wheel – and the first meeting horoscope – on the outer wheel.

What is striking here, is the position of the transiting North Node almost exactly conjunct the ascendant and the South Node on the descendant. Destiny seems to be stepping up to the plate here. The Moon symbolizes the feminine: the South Node is conjunct Bowie’s radix Moon in the 7th house of marriage and partnership. This is the stuff that astrological fairy tales are made of. These two have surely met before – and I get the impression that Bowie immediately recognized his love in and for Iman. Saturn is Bowie’s ascendant ruler – and also ruler of his Capricorn sun. Transiting Saturn – conjuncts Bowie’s Mars/Sun conjunction – in  the 12th house. The 12th house is often tied – as is Saturn – to the idea of karma: yet it is in this house, that Saturn has his joy.

The Sun is ruler of Bowie’s 7th house. The transit of Saturn over the Sun – brings – in the light of the secondary progressed New Moon – a new cycle of relationship into effect. Clearly, with the Lord of the 7th (the Sun) in the 12th – Bowie had a deep inner need for privacy in his intimate relationships. It is his inner world that Bowie really wants to explore with his partner. This is his ‘other half’ – which possibly up to this point in his life had largely been overshadowed by the zany stage persona he expressed through his Aquarius ascendant. I am thinking particularly here of Bowie’s alter ego’s Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane.

There is so much more to say about all the charts presented here. Please feel free to leave your own thoughts and comments.
