Liz Hathway: 2017 is a pit stop, a year of transition

2016 was the year when confusion reigned supreme ! Saturn’s squares to  Neptune formed the portal to a new era of post-truth and objective facts faded into insignificance in the light of appeals to emotion and personal belief.  Stars, not those that glitter and twinkle in the firmament of heaven, dropped like flies. Beginning with Bowie and ending with George Michael these deaths served to remind us that the world really is a stage and we all have our entrance and our exit. Now here we stand on a precipice, or so it seems: welcome to the astrology of 2017.

Early in 2017, we might already feel like guests at the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. On February 29th, Mars, Moon and Uranus in Aries oppose Jupiter, while the Sun simultaneously conjuncts Neptune in Pisces. What we might glimpse is a vague outline of a new world order in which military might is set to play an even bigger role. If we think military, Neptune and Pisces are both watery, so think navy, think ships, think the dream fleet. With Sun computer Neptune, we could also think of an aggressive computer hack or virus, system exposure, collapse, or a glitch in data-sharing, a big data leak, scandal, or, a web of deceit or lies. The last week of February and the first week of March are particularly potent because Mars is in Aries and with Jupiter also in square with Pluto on March 30th, this spring looks especially volatile. The great French mundane astrologer, Andre Barbault thought that the Jupiter/Pluto cycle related to the growth of terrorism, Plutocracy and power of all kinds, which includes mental, physical, material and spiritual power. This can be good news on an individual level, since it presents us with opportunities to become more conscious.

From April 7th, the Sun in Aries moves into opposition with Jupiter and into conjunction with Uranus while Saturn stations and moves retrograde. This feels like a retreat, or some hesitation. Then on April 10th Mercury retrogrades too. So what should we expect? Some serious attitude, big gestures, strong words, threats, tension. Think ‘Mad Hatter’ …. The forceful Jupiter square Pluto energy extends through until the final Jupiter/Pluto square on August 4th. In my opinion, quite early on in 2017 it will become really apparent that there are now a lot of macho men on the world stage. Trump, Poetin, Farage, Geert Wilders, Netanyahu, are alpha males. POSTURING will be in vogue. Think male birds mating, etc. etc..

With Jupiter in Libra until October 10th 2017 some remnant or memory of consensus reality lingers on. Jupiter in Libra is aesthetically sensitive and civil in its dealings with others, yet it will find it difficult to uphold a polite, clean cut, politically correct view of how ‘we should’ behave. Uranus opposes Jupiter in 2017 and Uranus in Aries represents an uncouth, direct, rough shod, yes even a violent approach to getting things done. Uranus in Aries is dangerous, explosive, but effective, in some ways 2017 will show us how violence – or the threat of it – moves points up the political agenda, or actually determines the political agenda. Uranus in Aries is uncensored and powerful and has a somewhat dismal view of polite society. Uranus in Aries does not want compromise, it prefers a ‘ my way or the highway’  approach to consensus reality. Jupiter opposes Uranus and this is rebellious, audacious energy, think fall of the Berlin Wall, or assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. Israel and Palestine are both born under and therefore resonate with the Jupiter/Uranus cycle. So personally, I expect even more tension in the Middle East next year.

While Jupiter and Uranus  fight it out- Saturn in Sagittarius is the referee. Jupiter almost sextiles Saturn early February, but stations a degree short. Jupiter retrogrades until June 9th and finally sextiles Saturn on August 27th. This kind of leaves us ever on the look out for openings that promote growth. In principle the Saturn/Jupiter sextile is opportunistic and as such, it is a stimulus to the economy. Given the positive reception between the planets, 2017 could be a wonderful year for entrepreneurs and risk-takers: where there is danger there is opportunity.

Libra, Sagittarius and Jupiter are connected to judges and the law courts – so I expect High Court judges to be called upon to give rulings simply so we retain some semblance of the old order (Saturn). Saturn is about the essence – and Sagittarius is moralistic.

After much pussy footing around, Saturn finally trines Uranus on November 11th. The main astrological interplay of 2017 involves Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus and it is worthwhile noting what history has to say about this three planet combo. In 1865 – Jupiter was in Sagittarius opposite Uranus in Gemini – with Saturn in Libra. At the time, civil war raged in the United States – and on April 14th under this planetary cocktail – Abe Lincoln was assassinated. His assassin  John Wilkes-Booth, a supporter of slavery and an open Confederate sympathiser, shot Lincoln while he and his wife attended a theater performance in Washington. Here we see how opportunistic Jupiter opposite Uranus can be. Booth was a theater man, his father had been a great actor, and it was Booth’s connections within the theater world that afforded him the opportunity to get physically close to Lincoln.

Yet planets can express themselves in a choice of ways and where one person will enact the planetary drama in a drastic or possibly violent way, other more creative souls will find artistic expression for this same energy. On November 26th 1865 the same planetary mix has moved signs. Jupiter is now in Capricorn, Uranus is in Cancer, and Saturn is in Scorpio. On this date Lewis Carroll published Alice in Wonderland and the first true classic in English children’s literature was born.  Alice, it has been suggested, is the first fictional character in children’s literature to possess what academics now call ‘interiority’. ” Alice thinks for herself, she’s reflective, a Victorian girl capable of autonomy. Wonderland is a dangerous place full of opportunities for adventure. At the time Alice was published, Jupiter was also moving into aspect with Pluto, which makes my analogy complete.

It seems to me that 2017 is a pit stop on the road to somewhere else. It is a year of transition in more ways than one. Trump takes over from Obama. Britain will trigger article 50 and enter into negotiations to exit Europe. Elections will be held in France, the Netherlands and perhaps more importantly, in Germany. Following the recent attack at a Berlin Christmas market, Angela Merkel is currently facing enormous criticism. Some see Dec. 19, 2016, the day of the attack, as ’the “beginning of the end” of the Christian West’. A fallen Christmas tree in front of the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church a symbol of the beginning of the end of the Christian West. Merkel has the Sun conjunct Uranus in 24/25 degrees Cancer so is most definitely in the hot seat. I believe that countries – like people – seek atonement, or redemption for their sins. Given German’s history, it always seemed very poignant to me, that Angela Merkel sought to offer a safe haven for refugees. Merkel is after all a Christian.

We are gearing up to enter into a completely new astrological era. Saturn enters Capricorn on December 20th, 2017 – and so at the end of the year we begin to move towards a defining event which will take place in 2020 when in March 2020, Jupiter, Mars, Pluto and Saturn conjoin in Capricorn, followed on Dec. 21 2020, by the mutation conjunction of Jupiter/Saturn, which takes place in the first degree of Aquarius. We are currently moving away from a 240 year period when the conjunctions of Jupiter and Saturn took place in the earth signs, into a new era, when the conjunctions will occur in the air signs and this is a very significant shift.

Reflecting on the above leads me to conclude that I have painted a rather bleak view of 2017. Yet I know that the human spirit is resilient. We are a violent but also a creative, intelligent species. When Pandora opened the box… hope was kept alive. I believe that the entry of Uranus into Taurus will see a re-assessment of the ideas of Karl Marx. I think that socialism – or a completely new version of it – will re-surface. Our planet is in crisis – and in the words of the Stranglers, ‘Something’s got to change’.

Thank you for taking the time to read this blog post. For 2017, I wish you Peace, Love and Wisdom.
